Literature Ireland

Súil Amach | An Outward Eye

From July to December 2026, Literature Ireland presents a newly commissioned photographic exhibition, Súil Amach | An Outward Eye, at the European Parliament in Brussels. This initiative is part of Cultúr 2026, the official cultural programme of Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Taking inspiration from the Irish proverb “An té a bhíonn siúlach, bíonn scéalach” (“Those who travel have stories to tell”), the exhibition brings together 24 portraits of contemporary Irish writers, commissioned by Literature Ireland and photographed by Conor Horgan. Alongside the portraits there is a display of Irish literature by all 24 authors in translation, representing all 24 official languages of the European Union.

Writers featured: John Banville, Kevin Barry, Sara Baume, Garrett Carr, Jan Carson, Mary Costello, Naoise Dolan, Anne Enright, Wendy Erskine, Seán Farrell, Elaine Feeney, Nicole Flattery, Vona Groarke, Louise Kennedy, Ferdia Lennon, Paul Lynch, Louise Nealon, Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin, Doireann Ní Ghríofa, Tadhg Mac Dhonnagáin, Micheál Ó Conghaile, Darach Ó Scolaí, Elske Rahill and Colm Tóibín.

A launch event will take place on 8 September, after which the exhibition will remain open for the duration of Ireland's EU Presidency.
