Aodh Ruadh Ó Domhnaill Poetry Bursary Recipients Announced

The Tyrone Guthrie Centre, Annaghmakerrig and Residencia Literaria 1863 are delighted to announce Grace Wells and Jesús Castro Yáñez as the recipients of the Aodh Ruadh Ó Domhnaill Poetry Bursary for 2022.

Grace Wells, who will be resident at the Residencia Literaria 1863 in A Coruña, Galicia for the month of September, is an award-winning eco-poet and environmental writer. Nature, spirit-of-place and environmental concern are the large themes of her writing. She has published three collection with Dedalus Press, most recently, The Church of the Love of the World. In 2021 she was selected as Poet Laureate for Ennistymon as part of Poetry Ireland’s Poetry Town project. Her eco-poetry film can be viewed at

Her project, A Coruña, Cornucopia, will propel Grace Wells into a poetic enquiry into the ways A Coruña responds to the nature and ecologies that underpin its existence. Wells plans on creating a sequence of poems that will trace nature’s influence on the city’s culture, and also explore A Coruña’s complex relationship with the natural world.

Galician poet and translator Jesús Castro Yáñez, a multi-disciplinary poet and performer, will be resident at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre, Annaghmakerrig for the month of September. His award-winning collections include Os nomes e os himnos (2016), /\/\/\ (2017), and Ultramarino (2017). He has also edited and translated the anthology of queer poems Campo de plumas. His work has been translated into Greek, Finnish, English and Slovenian, and  his translation of Anne Carson’s The Anthropology of Water is forthcoming.

OUTRO (OTHER) is a project that foregrounds the sound of language, how gesture can be made purely from dialogue. OUTRO is conceived as an encounter, an intertextuality between self and other, where we often don’t know who is who. Yáñez is concerned with the capabilities of poetry, with integration and liberation. The poems, arranged into two symmetrical halves, will act as stereoscopic images or copies of an original that does not yet exist.

Keith Payne, curator of the Aodh Ruadh Ó Domhnaill Poetry Bursary said "The Aodh Ruadh Ó Domhnaill Poetry Bursary awardees for 2022 are exciting and innovative poets and we look forward to the outcome of their residencies in Spain and Ireland. The award is made possible through the support of Literature Ireland, The Tyrone Guthrie Centre, Annaghmakerrig, Residencia Literaria 1863, The Irish Embassy, Madrid, Poetry Ireland and the Xunta de Galicia."
