In this event, award-winning translators Antain Mac Lochlainn and Máirín Nic Con Iomaire, and poet Simon Ó Faoláin, will explore what it means to translate other literatures into Irish. Which books are being translated? What is not being translated or published? Are there particular challenges? Should a country translate from elsewhere?

This conversation will be conducted in both Irish and English.

Antain Mac Lochlainn is a writer and translator from Coleraine, Co. Derry. As well as being a prolific translator, he is editor of the translator resource site www.aistear.ie and has published several texts on writing in Irish.

Máirín Nic Con Iomaire is Director of Translation Programmes at Maynooth University where she also teaches on the MA/Postgraduate Diploma in Translation and Editing. In 2022, she was awarded the Gradam De Bhaldraithe for her translation of Khalil by Yasmina Khadra

Simon Ó Faoláin has published four collections of poetry in Irish to date, the most recent being Iasachtaigh (Coiscéim, 2022), as well as two books of literary translation. His work has received are the Glen Dimplex Prize, the Strong/Shine Award, the Walter Macken Prize, the Colmcille Prize and the Foras na Gaeilge Prize.

The conversations are inspired by Literature Ireland's collection of Irish literature in translation, which are also included in the National Library's book collection.
