Literature Ireland

Blúiríní

Literature Ireland launched Blúiríní this week, a series of videos featuring some of Ireland’s most exciting writers. The videos, filmed across Ireland by cinematographer JP Quill, feature Niamh Campbell, Elaine Feeney, Aingeala Flannery, Nicole Flattery, Seán Hewitt, Niamh Mulvey, David Toms, and Sophie White. These videos promote the work of eight Irish writers whose books featured in our last edition of New Writing from Ireland. Each author is on either their first or second book, or has made the transition to a new genre.

Blúiríní (Irish for little snippets) offers an insight into the writers’ work spaces and home places. Literature Ireland asked the writers to introduce their most recent book, discuss a current favourite title by an Irish author, and consider which language they would love to see their own work translated into.

“With Blúiríní, Literature Ireland hopes to build an awareness of new voices in Irish literature and to communicate just some of the sense of excitement writers experience at the prospect of their work being read in another language,” said Sinéad Mac Aodha, Director of Literature Ireland, speaking of the launch of the videos. “Literature Ireland is proud to present this series, which features stunning views of Irish towns and cities with accompanying music by Myles O’Reilly. We see this as just the start of a new chapter in Literature Ireland's international promotion of Irish writing.”

Starting with Booker-longlisted Elaine Feeney, the videos will be released on Literature Ireland’s YouTube channel and social media platforms over the next four weeks prior to Frankfurt Book Fair 2023, where Literature Ireland will once again present new books by Irish authors to industry professionals from across the world.

Blúiríní was made possible thanks to the support of the Arts Council | An Chomhairle Ealaíon.
