ILE joins the new Centre for Literary Translation, TCD

'Translating Seamus Heaney', the booklet prepared for the public launch of the Centre for Literary Translation

THE CENTRE FOR LITERARY TRANSLATION is a newly established partnership between Literature Ireland, Dalkey Archive Press, the Oscar Wilde Centre and the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures in Trinity College Dublin.

This initiative brings together business, culture, research, and the training of cultural practitioners in an innovative and mutually enriching cluster. It strengthens and diversifies the potential for collaboration between sectors in the field of cultural exchange. It also facilitates increased outreach to communities in Dublin, Ireland, and abroad, and the generation of funding for activities relating to literature and its translation.

Finally, it transforms the environment for MPhil students in Trinity College by providing opportunities to bridge the divide between the theory and practice of literary translation, creative writing and editing and the realities of the world of publishing, marketing and distributing which fashions their careers. This initiative is the result of Trinity College’s commitment through the Creative Arts, Technologies and Culture Initiative to create a dynamic network of interconnectivity at the heart of the city in education, research, creative practice and entrepreneurship.

The Centre was publicly launched on 11 April with a special event celebrating the work of Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney and his translators. During the event, which took place in Trinity College Chapel, Grigory Kruzhkov (Russia), Pura López-Colomé (Mexico), András Imreh (Hungary), Fancesca Romana Paci (Italy) and Jerzy Jarniewicz (Poland) read a selection of their translations of Heaney's work. The translators' presentations were punctuated by the poet's reading of the same poems in their original language.

Presentations were given by Heaney's Italian editor Anna Ravano, Acting Director of the Centre and Associate Professor in Russian Dr Sarah Smyth and the Director of ILE, Sinéad Mac Aodha. Master of Ceremonies for the evening was Professor Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin of the School of English, TCD.

The complete lineup for the night can be viewed here.
