2016 Commemorations at the London Book Fair

Literature Ireland (formerly Literature Ireland) ran a special 2016 commemorations programme at this year’s London Book Fair with funding from Culture Ireland as part of the Ireland 2016 Commemorations Programme.

The main additional feature at the Ireland stand this year was an exhibition of a cross-section of illustrations by artist David Rooney. These illustrations were commissioned by the Royal Irish Academy for its book 1916: Lives and Portraits, edited by Lawrence William White and James Quinn, which presents biographies of those deeply involved in the Rising.

Literature Ireland hosted a reception for publishers and agents at the Irish stand to introduce the exhibition and contextualise the importance of the centenary.  David Rooney and Lawrence William White, the illustrator and one of the book’s editors respectively, spoke at the event and refreshments were served. The exhibition was promoted through a special Twitter campaign at the fair.

Copies of Books Ireland (which celebrated its 40th anniversary during the fair) and the current bumper issue of The Stinging Fly, called In the Wake of the Rising, were also distributed to international publishers and rights agents during the fair to further stress the historical importance of the Rising and to give our international colleagues more information about the commemorations, as well as to promote the Irish writers and writing featured in these editions.
