(1970)
A native of Dublin, Mark O'Rowe is a playwright whose plays are concerned with 'the underbelly of the Celtic Tiger'. His dystopic, darkly comic vision of contemporary urban Ireland is expounded in From Both Hips (1997), Anna's Ankle (1997), Howie the Rookie (1999), Made in China (2001), Crestfall (2003) and in his latest play, Terminus (2007). Howie the Rookie won the George Devine Award, the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature and an Irish Times/ESB Irish Theatre Award for Best New Play. Mark O'Rowe also wrote the screenplay for the hugely successful 2003 film, Intermission, starring Colin Farrell and Cillian Murphy.

Howie the Rookie

Nick Hern, 1999

Howie the Rookie was first produced in 1999 and won the George Devine Award, the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature and an Irish Times/ESB Irish Theatre Award for Best New Play. In it two interlinked monologues offer a white-knuckle ride through a nightmare Dublin, where the most brutal events take on a mythic significance and black hilarity.
