Brian Moore's penultimate novel is a thriller based on the real-life story of French war criminal Paul Touvier who serves as a model for the protagonist Pierre Brossard. Although condemned to death in absentia after the Second World War, he manages to escape with the help of influential friends in the Catholic church and governement officials. Following a Presidential pardon in the 1971, it is discovered at the beginning of the 1990s that Brossard was also responsible for the brutal, needless killing of 14 Jews in the French village of Dombey in 1945. Now indicted for crimes against humanity, Brossard is again pursued by officials eager to bring the collaborators of Vichy France to justice, as well as by assassins hired by a secret Jewish group who carry the statement referred to by the title: a summary of his crimes, to be pinned to his dead body. The novel was adapted for cinema in 2003 with Michael Caine as Pierre Brossard.
