Bram Stoker

Born in Dublin in 1847, Abraham Bram Stoker is best known as the author of the vampire novel Dracula (1897). Stoker graduated from Trintiy College with a degree in mathematics and joined the civil service. While still a student, he had become a theatre critic for the Dublin Evening Mail and later began publishing his first stories in magazines. In 1878, Stoker became personal assistant to the famous actor Henry Irving and business manager of Irving's Lyceum Theatre in London. In 1882, Stoker published his first collection of stories, Under the Sunset, and his first full-length novel, The Snake's Pass, followed in 1890. Other works include The Jewel of Seven Stars (1903), Personal Reminiscences of Henry Irving (1906), and The Lair of the White Worm (1911). Having suffered a number of strokes, Bram Stoker died in London in 1912. His ashes were placed in a display urn and can still be visited today at Golders Green.
