Death in Summer

William Trevor

Thaddeus Davenant is the last descendant of a distinguished English family and owner of Quincunx House. He has just lost his wife, Letitia, whom he married primarily out of financial necessity. In need of a nanny for his infant daughter, Georgina, he meets Pettie, a young girl who grew up in the Morning Star, a grim institution for homeless children. Although their worlds could not be more different, Thaddeus and Pettie are both haunted by the same longing for love which they never received from their environment. When Pettie abducts Georgina from Quincunx House, Thaddeus allows himself to feel real emotion for the first time and submits to the incredible love he has for his own daughter. Pettie, in turn, realises that she has to go back to the Morning Star, the origin of her troubles, to find her freedom.
