Liam O'Flaherty

28 August 1896 - 07 September 1984

Born on Inishmore, one of the Aran Islands, Liam O'Flaherty is one of Ireland's best known short story writers. He attended University College Dublin and joined the Irish Guards during the First World War. He was discharged due to injury in 1917 and spent the next three years travelling before returning to Ireland. O'Flaherty's main novels are The Black Soul (1924), The Informer (1925), which was made into a film by director John Ford, The Assassin (1928), Shame the Devil (1934), and Famine (1937). His short story collections include The Short Stories of Liam O'Flaherty (1937), Dúil (1953), and The Pedlar's Revenge and Other Stories (1976). Liam O'Flaherty died in Dublin in 1984. He was a member of Aosdána.
