Trad

Mark Doherty

Trad was first produced in The Galway Arts Festival in 2004 and subsequently appeared on stages in Dublin, Edinburgh, London, Perth and Adelaide. It was published by Methuen as part of the collection Six Contemporary Irish Plays.

The play follows the relationship of a 100-year-old Irishman and his father in a surreal comedy that looks at the value of tradition. Da, an ancient widower, berates his son Thomas for failing to provide a son to continue the family line. One day, Thomas just happens to mention that he fathered a son 70 years ago. Joe insists that they travel to find the last remaining successor and the odd pair embark on a short, but nonetheless epic journey.
