The House

Tom Murphy

Summer time, 1950s Ireland. Christy Cavanagh is one among many emigrants returning home for their annual visit. Back in his rural Irish home town, his first call is to the house of Mrs. de Burca, a widow, and her three daughters, spinster Marie, dangerous Suzanne and unhappily married Louise. When he discovers the place he considers home is up for sale, he feels he must take action or face being totally cut adrift.
The House was commissioned by the Abbey Theatre and premiered in April 2000. Its themes of searching for belonging and emigration, as well as its exploration of failed cultural ideals offer an insightful vision of Ireland, past and present, that resonates in today’s society.
