The Great Hunger

Patrick Kavanagh

With the long narrative poem The Great Hunger, written in three days, Kavanagh introduced the anti-hero Patrick Maguire, an Irish bachelor farmer whose life is one of sterility and despair amidst the fertility of his potato fields. Many critics rank Kavanagh among the best poets in Ireland since W. B. Yeats, citing this poem as his most remarkable achievement.
