The Gathering

Anne Enright

The nine surviving children of the Hegarty clan gather in Dublin for the wake of their wayward brother Liam. His sister Veronica is convinced it wasn't the drink that killed him - although that certainly helped - but what happened to him as a boy in his grandmother's house, in the winter of 1968. Tracing the line of hurt and redemption through three generations, her narrative shows how memories warp and family secrets fester. Winner of the 2007 Booker Prize, The Gathering is a family epic that has been described by the chair of the judges, Howard Davies, as both a"powerful, uncomfortable and even at times angry book" and "a very readable and enjoyable novel".
