Old Friends: The Adventures of Fionn Mac Cumhaill

Tom O'Neill

Following the death of his father, Arthur McClean - or Dark - moves from the city to the farm of his eccentric uncle Connie. Picked on in school by his cruel teacher Sullivan and the vindictive principal, he is let down by form-filling social workers and classed as a trouble-maker. Back on the farm, however, he stumbles into a very different world one day when he discovers a magical place: an ancient rath. There, he meets people big and small every night whose magnificent stories of warriors, monsters and the fairy people provide an escape and take him deep into the world of the mythical hero Fionn Mac Cumhaill and the Fianna. Dark discovers that even the past and the lives of heroes are not exempt from struggle, fear, treachery, weakness, and redemption, and that he, like his uncle, belongs to two different worlds.
