Begun in 1912 and completed only after the First World War in 1922, Rilke's Duino Elegies are named after the castle near Trieste where the poet was a guest of Princess Marie von Thurn und Taxis-Hohenlohe at the time he composed the first elegy. The ten elegies alternate between hymns celebrating states of happiness - for example in love - and elegies invoking haunting images of existential suffering.
The Irish-language publisher Leabhar Breac, with the support of Literature Ireland has now published the world-famous Duino Elegies in Irish, translated by the poet Máire Mhac an tSaoi.
