Granuaile: Sea Queen of Ireland

Anne Chambers

Granuaile ruled on land and sea in the province of Connaught over 400 years ago. This book, adapted for young readers, explores the legend of the Pirate Queen who spurned the laws and conventions of her time, fearlessly combining the traditional roles of wife and mother with those of a warrior and leader. Born c. 1530 the daughter of a Gaelic chieftain, she excelled in the traditional seafaring attributes of her family - sea-trading to Ireland, Scotland and Spain, with some piracy and plundering on the side. After many adventures and escapades, she launched her perhaps biggest coup, sailing to London to negotiate her freedom in a famous meeting with Queen Elizabeth I.
