Academy Street

Mary Costello

A luminous portrait of a life on the margins, the plot of Academy Street spans more than half a century.

In the 1940s, when Tess is seven years old, her mother dies of tuberculosis. With this loss, a fundamental loneliness creeps into this quiet child's life. Tess is twenty by the time her studies in nursing bring her from the family estate of Easterfield to Dublin; shortly afterwards, her sister Claire suggests that she join her in New York. The vast metropolis and the whirlwind atmosphere of the 1960s carry the shy young woman toward her destiny.
