The Sugar Wife

Elizabeth Kuti

Set amongst Dublin's Quaker community in 1850, the play tells the story of Hannah Tewkley, who is conflicted between her work with the poor and her duty to her ambitious husband who runs a string of successful teahouses. When an English philanthropist and a freed former slave arrive to give a series of anti-slavery lectures, Hannah invites them to stay with them. A visit which begins with the best of intentions ends in collisons which reveal how each of the four characters is less high-minded than they would like to be thought.
